Going Outside

prompt or not: going outside
aww ~ 04/09/14

*****

Today, I walked alone downtown, making my way from Holly and Poplar up to Fourth Street where Mellow Mushroom is located across from the indie cinema, Aperture. I had a craving for some Mellow pizza.

I felt somewhat foreign among the people on the sidewalks - foreign but alive.

I usually walk trails and woods, not city sidewalks.

I thought, I am among the living; they have community. I don't feel I fit, but I'm comfortable with not fitting. Maybe I should do this more often.

It's so nice that the weather is starting to turn nice here again. I walked outside a bit yesterday trying to let the sun bake off much of this past horrendous winter.

I looked up Mellow Mushroom, never heard of it, but we have one near us, too. What's your favorite pizza there?

I don't eat there enough to know my fav pizza.

But, MM offers gluten free crusts (as well as gluten free ingredients). I'm gluten-avoidant, not gluten free. I have acid reflux too..and MM offers tomato free sauces. So that's why I wanted one of their pizzas...to avoid the gluten.

This round, I enjoyed a gluten-free crust HOLY SHIITAKE PIE:
Olive oil and garlic base, Shiitake, button and Portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions, mozzarella and MontAmoré cheeses. Drizzled with garlic aioli and black truffle oil. Garnished with fresh chives and shaved Parmesan.

It was really good.

But...next time I'll make my own. Much less expensive.

Oh I'm sure you could make your own Carol. I bought several packages of gluten free pizza crust mix. Hubby likes to avoid gluten, so we do what we can.

It was a glorious day today- but I feel like all I did was breathe! I slept in late...exhausted from my workweek. Didn't accomplish much. :( I didn't walk outside on this beautiful day, didn't go to the gym, didn't work on my watercolor painting... Hope I can do better tomorrow.

Being able to get outside again is sure helping me feel more human! It's been a much-too-long-and-terribly-cold winter. Walking with a baby in a stroller helps me feel connected to people. They almost always make eye contact and smile instead of observing the usual "personal space" rules or staying absorbed in their phones.

I made some gluten-free, tomato-free pizza at home. First trial was pretty good. Probably due it again, but make the crust thinner.

"...absorbed in their phones"

Oh my gosh...I know. The information age can sure take over a person's life.

Are you familiar with the book Margin by Dr. Richard Swenson? It was in that book that I first read the following, attributed to Plautus who lived in 200 BC.
The gods confound the man who first found out
How to distinguish hours! Confound him, too,
Who in this place set up a sun-dial,
To cut and hack my days so wretchedly
Into small portions....

A freaking sundial. Imagine what he would think now.

Babies. What wonderful little clocks they are. All the world revolves around them. (I'm thinking in a good way...makes us have to slow down.)

Thanks for reading and commenting Rachel and I'm glad you're able to get out and enjoy the weather, finally. I hear some places (that normally are 'done' with winter by now) are getting snow again this week. Surely by May, the snows will stop.
